Collin County
Electrician in Weston, TX
Licensed & insured electrical work for Weston, TX homeowners — panel upgrades, EV chargers, lighting, generators, and repairs from a local, owner-operated team.

Weston is the closest town to our shop. We are based in Celina, and Weston sits about eight miles east of us in northern Collin County - roughly twelve miles north of McKinney and seven miles west of Anna.
It is also one of the oldest towns in the county and one of the smallest. The 2020 census counted 283 residents inside the city limits, which undersells the place: most Weston addresses are acreage properties spread across the Blackland Prairie rather than houses on a subdivision street, and the growth running through Celina and Anna on either side is now pressing in from both directions.
What that means practically is that there is no such thing as a typical Weston electrical job. In a single week we might rewire part of a house that is a century old, pull a new feeder out to a barn, and finish out a patio on a build that is eight months old. Tamen Privratsky has done licensed electrical work across North Texas for over 13 years, and because Weston is a short drive from the shop we can usually get there quickly.
An Old Town on the Blackland Prairie
Settlers reached this area in the early 1840s, drawn by the rich Blackland Prairie soils and water from Honey Creek and the East Fork of the Trinity. Larkin Adamson arrived in 1850, built the first store, and named the community after his hometown of Weston, Missouri. A post office opened in 1854, the town was a stop on the Sherman-to-Dallas stage route through the 1850s and 1860s, and it was incorporated in 1887. By 1890 it had five general stores, a cotton gin and a gristmill, and in March 1900 it became one of the first towns in Texas to receive rural free mail delivery. All of that is documented in the Handbook of Texas entry for Weston.
That history shows up in the wiring. The oldest houses here have usually been updated two or three times, and what you find inside the walls is layered rather than designed: abandoned circuits that were never pulled out, a mid-century service that was adequate at the time, and modern loads stacked on top of both. Two-prong outlets with no ground, a fuse box or a 1970s panel with no open slots left, warm switch plates, and lights that dim when the air conditioning starts are the usual tells.
Depending on what we find that is an electrical panel upgrade, a home rewiring project, or targeted electrical repairs on the one circuit actually causing trouble. We will tell you honestly which one you are looking at - a new 200-amp panel bolted onto original branch wiring fixes the capacity problem and none of the safety problem. Our guide to the signs your home needs rewiring walks through what we look for.
Acreage Properties, Barns, Shops and Well Pumps
Most of what we do in Weston is not inside the house. It is the barn, the shop, the well house, the gate, and the run of wire out to each of them that somebody added whenever it was needed.
Rural outbuilding wiring tends to accumulate rather than get designed, and the patterns repeat. A feeder sized years ago for a light and a receptacle now runs a welder and an air compressor. Direct-burial cable comes out of the ground with no protection where a mower will eventually find it. A sub-panel at the barn has no grounding electrode of its own, or it is still bonded as if it were the service. None of that is unusual on an older property, and none of it is safe to keep adding to.
What fixes it is a correctly sized feeder, a proper sub-panel at the building it serves, and GFCI-protected outlets where the code calls for them - with the main service load-checked first, because the house panel is often the real constraint. If it is already full, that becomes a panel conversation, and our guide to electrical panel upgrade cost in Collin County gives real North Texas numbers before you call anyone.
Properties on a well and septic system also make generator installation more than a convenience purchase. No power means no water here, and the rural feeder lines that serve this part of the county tend to come back later than lines in town. We size the transfer switch to the circuits that matter - well pump, refrigeration, a few lighting and outlet circuits, the HVAC if the unit supports it - rather than trying to carry the whole house. If you are still choosing between a permanently wired unit and a portable, we compared them in our standby vs portable generator guide.
New Homes on Weston's Edges as Celina and Anna Grow
Weston sits between two of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Celina was ranked the fastest-growing city in the United States by the Census Bureau for the year ending mid-2025, and Anna is not far behind. Weston has stayed small, but new houses are going up on the land around it, and those owners call us for a different kind of work.
On a newer build the job is almost always finish-out rather than repair. A builder wires the house as drawn, not as a family ends up using it, so the calls are for a dedicated circuit in the garage or shop, a weatherproof outlet on the patio, recessed lighting in a room that came with one builder-grade fixture, or ceiling fans on a covered patio.
EV charger installation is the other common request, and on a large lot the distance matters as much as the panel. A long run to a detached garage or shop can make a sub-panel out there cheaper than a single home run across the property. We do the load calculation and measure the run before quoting, not after. Whole-home surge protection is worth asking about at the same time: storm and grid-switching surges reach a new house exactly as easily as an old one, and a new house has far more sensitive equipment plugged into it.
Permits, Inspections and Weston's Contractor Registration
Weston is small, but it does not skip the paperwork, and this catches people out. The city's own FAQ is direct about it: permits and inspections are required within the city limits for new construction, remodels, additions, demolitions, fences and more, and permits for swimming pools and spas are required as well.
The city also requires every contractor working in Weston - general contractors included - to register and pay a $75 fee before doing the work. Weston has since moved all permit applications onto an online portal called One Stop Weston, so applications that used to go across the counter at City Hall on Main Street now go through the portal.
We handle the registration and the permit as part of the job rather than leaving it to the homeowner. Statewide, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code as the minimum standard for electrical work, effective September 1, 2023, and cities may amend it further. For background on why a permit matters on panel work specifically, see do you need a permit to upgrade an electrical panel in Texas.
Confirm Who Owns the Drop Before You Schedule
Northern Collin County is not served by a single electric delivery utility. Oncor is the largest distribution utility in the county and operates inside the retail-choice market, while Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative is a cooperative serving rural stretches of Collin and Grayson counties. Out here on the county roads, which one owns the drop can change from one address to the next.
For routine work the distinction never comes up. It matters on any job that requires the power to be cut at the meter: a panel upgrade, a service relocation, a damaged mast, a meter can replacement. A cooperative and a retail-choice utility do not schedule disconnects the same way, and booking the wrong one is how a one-day panel swap leaves a house without power overnight.
We confirm which utility serves your specific address before a date goes on the calendar, so the disconnect, the work, the inspection and the reconnect line up in the right order. If you are not sure which one you are on, your electric bill names the provider - a cooperative bill means the co-op.
Pools, Spas and Outdoor Living on a Weston Lot
Space is the one thing Weston properties are not short of, and a lot of our outdoor work here reflects that. Hot tub and spa wiring is a regular request, and it is one of the jobs where the permit genuinely matters - the city requires a permit for pools and spas, and spa circuits have specific requirements for the disconnect, the GFCI protection and the bonding around the tub that a generic 240-volt circuit does not satisfy.
Landscape and outdoor lighting behaves differently on acreage than it does on a quarter-acre lot. There is often no existing exterior wiring anywhere near where you want light, so we start by mapping what you actually want lit - a long driveway, a gate, a gathering area, the path between the house and the barn - instead of defaulting to a fixture package. A big property makes it easy to overspend on fixtures nobody ends up using.
Weatherproof outlets around patios, gates and outbuildings round out most of these projects. They are a small line item that saves running an extension cord across a yard for the next ten years.
Electrical Services We Provide in Weston
Because Weston spans century-old farmhouses, working acreage and brand-new builds within a couple of miles of each other, we quote every job individually. Our work here covers:
- Electrical panel upgrades with utility disconnect coordination
- Home rewiring for the oldest houses in town
- Generator installation and transfer switches for well-and-septic properties
- Hot tub and spa wiring
- Landscape and outdoor lighting for driveways, gates and outbuildings
- Electrical repairs and troubleshooting
If your project does not fit neatly into one of these - a barn feeder, a shop sub-panel, a gate operator circuit, a service mast after a storm - contact us and describe it. We quote most Weston jobs after a short conversation or a look at photos, and we will say upfront if something needs a site visit before we can give a firm number.
Why Weston Homeowners Work With a Local Electrician
Weston is small enough that plenty of contractors will not drive out for a single job, and far enough from town that a crew unfamiliar with acreage work can be out of its depth on a barn feeder or a well-pump circuit. We are eight miles away in Celina and do this kind of work constantly.
Tamenator Electrical Services is a small, owner-operated team, licensed and insured to work anywhere in Texas under the standards set by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Tamen Privratsky and technician Justin do the majority of Weston jobs themselves, so the person who quotes your work is usually the person who shows up to do it. If you need an electrician in Weston, request a free quote and we will give you a straight answer on scope, cost and timing.
Nearby Areas We Also Serve
Weston sits between Celina to the west, where we are based, and Anna to the east, with McKinney to the south and Melissa to the southeast. Homeowners across this stretch of northern Collin County deal with the same mix of acreage outbuildings, older homes needing a service brought up to date, and new-construction finish-out work, so we are used to moving between all three in the same week. You can see every city we cover on our service areas page, or get in touch and we will find a time that works.

Do you need a permit for electrical work in Weston, TX?
Yes. The City of Weston requires permits and inspections within the city limits for new construction, remodels, additions, demolitions and more, including swimming pools and spas. Applications go through the city's One Stop Weston online portal. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of the job.
Do contractors have to register with the City of Weston?
Yes. The city requires all contractors, general contractors included, to register and pay a $75 fee before working in Weston. We handle that registration ourselves rather than leaving it to the homeowner.
Who provides electricity in Weston?
It depends on the address. Oncor is the largest distribution utility in Collin County and operates in the retail-choice market, while Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative serves rural stretches of Collin and Grayson counties. We confirm which one owns the drop at your address before scheduling any work that requires the power to be cut at the meter.
Do you wire barns, shops and well pumps on acreage outside Weston?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do there. That usually means a correctly sized feeder and a proper sub-panel at the outbuilding, with the main service load-checked first. We also install standby generators and transfer switches on well-and-septic properties, where an outage means no water as well as no power.
Are you licensed and insured to work in Weston?
Yes. Tamenator Electrical Services is a licensed and insured Texas electrical contractor regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and we register with the City of Weston as the city requires. We are based in Celina, about eight miles west, and serve Weston regularly.
